The Manatee County Fair Starts in Palmetto Long Before January

The Manatee County Fair's gates open on Thursday, January 14, 2027. On the fair's own calendar, though, the first date is Saturday, November 14, 2026, when registration opens for the Baby Pageant. Two more deadlines and a rabbit show at Cook Arena come before anyone buys a corn dog.

So the fair runs for eleven days in January but spans about two months on the calendar, and nearly all of it happens at 1303 17th Street West, across from Palmetto High School. For Palmetto households, the fair is close enough to treat as a series of short trips. The 2027 price schedule rewards that, because the cheapest nights are mostly midweek evenings.

How the Fair Ended Up on 17th Street

The fair predates its Palmetto home by decades. According to the Manatee County Fair's history page, the Board of Trade approved a fair project on October 21, 1915. The Manatee County Fair Association was organized on February 17, 1916, and the first fair opened eleven days later, on February 28, 1916, paying out $500 in premiums.

Palmetto's part in the story starts in 1937. That year an application for a Manatee County Fair Association charter was turned down, and Palmetto civic leaders then pursued one under the name Manatee River Fair Association, which was granted. After a land exchange following the war, the county's agricultural center site on 17th Street became the fair's location, and the first building there opened in 1951. That puts the fair at roughly 75 years on its current site. In 2009 the Ayers Building, the Bell Annex exhibit halls and the old fair office came down to make way for the 18,000-square-foot Veterans Hall. The hall got air conditioning and restrooms in 2019.

The organization behind the fair is local too. The Manatee River Fair Association, Inc. is a private nonprofit and a registered agricultural fair, run by 37 elected directors, and county residents can become members. That membership is open to anyone in Palmetto who wants a hand in how the fair runs.

The Calendar Before the Gates Open

The agricultural fair runs ahead of the carnival. These are the dates already posted for the 2027 season:

  1. Saturday, November 14, 2026. Registration opens for the 2027 Baby Pageant, which is scheduled for Saturday, January 16.
  2. Monday, November 30, 2026, at noon. Registration closes for the Manatee County Fall Rabbit Show.
  3. Tuesday, December 1, 2026. Chapter and club exhibitors must make their selections for the 2027 youth livestock program by this date.
  4. Saturday, December 5, 2026. The Manatee County 4-H Fall Rabbit Show is at Cook Arena on the fairgrounds. Check-in runs from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. and judging starts at 9:00. The program includes showmanship, a costume contest themed on each rabbit's favorite snack, and rabbit-facts trivia. Entries are open to 4-H youth, FFA students and 4-H members from other Florida counties.
  5. January 9 through 24, 2027. The exhibitor pass office keeps posted hours across this whole stretch, starting five days before the public gates open.

If your household has a 4-H or FFA member, the December 1 deadline matters most on this list. If you just like watching a rabbit show on a December Saturday morning, it's a short drive for most of Palmetto.

Eleven Days, Two Price Tiers

The 2027 hours and admissions page lists daily admission at $10 for ages 13 and up, $6 for ages 6 to 12, and free for children 5 and under. Military admission is $6 with active-status ID, and parking costs $10.

Ride armbands come in two prices. The midweek dates, plus opening night, cost $25. Fridays, weekends and Monday, January 18, cost $30.

Date Gate hours Armband Also that day
Thu., Jan. 14 5–10 p.m. $25 Free gate for everyone
Fri., Jan. 15 5–10 p.m. $30 Midway open until 11:30 p.m.
Sat., Jan. 16 Noon–10 p.m. $30 Baby Pageant; midway until 11:30 p.m.
Sun., Jan. 17 Noon–10 p.m. $30
Mon., Jan. 18 Noon–10 p.m. $30 Kid's Day, noon–3 p.m.
Tue., Jan. 19 5–10 p.m. $25
Wed., Jan. 20 Noon–10 p.m. $25 Senior Day, $6 admission
Thu., Jan. 21 5–10 p.m. $25
Fri., Jan. 22 5–10 p.m. $30 Midway open until 11:30 p.m.
Sat., Jan. 23 Noon–10 p.m. $30 Midway open until 11:30 p.m.
Sun., Jan. 24 Noon–7 p.m. $30 Final day, early close

All four $25 nights fall on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and the cheapest gate of the run is opening night, which costs nothing. Wednesday, January 20, stacks the most savings in one day: the $25 armband, $6 Senior Day admission from noon to 10 p.m., and a midway that opens at 3 p.m. On opening night an adult with an armband pays $25 plus $10 parking, compared with $40 plus parking on a Saturday. The posted discounts all land on weeknights, which suits households close enough to drive over after work.

Opening Night Is Paid for by Local Businesses

The free gate on Thursday, January 14, runs from 5 to 10 p.m. and is sponsored by Palmetto Build and Detwiler's Farm Market. The fair asks everyone to bring a canned good for the Food Bank of Manatee. Kid's Day on January 18 has a local sponsor as well: Woodruff and Son's Inc. covers free admission from noon to 3 p.m. for children and for students with a school ID.

The 2026 opening night showed what that first evening looks like. FOX 13 reported a large crowd even as temperatures dropped into the mid-40s, with 38 rides, dozens of food vendors, shows and livestock. The same report described a line at the Kiwanis Club corn-dog booth, where the operator said fairgoers are used to cold starts. FOX 13 also reported that Peachey's Baking Company sold nearly 2,000 glazed doughnuts that night, and fairgoers named the local food vendors as a reason they come back.

The 2026 midway count is a one-year figure. ABC7's 2026 preview listed 38 rides, four of them new that year. The 2027 lineup and entertainment had not been posted as of late October 2026, so check the fair's homepage as January gets closer.

The Barns Are Why the Fair Exists

The 1916 fair paid premiums, not ride prizes, and the youth livestock program still anchors the event. On the second day of the 2026 fair, Your Observer covered young exhibitors getting animals ready for the ring. The animals ranged from a six-month-old pig to a Brangus chapter calf weighing more than three-quarters of a ton. Exhibitors come from across the county, including families from Lakewood Ranch, and they all end up in Palmetto for those eleven days.

Local businesses are the buyers at the sale. According to the fair's livestock buyers page, Arctic Air Home Services bought the 2026 Grand Champion Steer and Peace River Electric Co-op bought the 2026 Grand Champion Swine. The full list of placings is on the youth livestock champions page.

Livestock show times for 2027 had not been posted as of late October 2026. The exhibitor pass office opens on January 9, five days before the first ticket is sold.

Fitting the Fair Into a Palmetto January

For a household a few minutes from 17th Street West, the posted schedule supports a few short visits instead of one long one:

  • Thursday, January 14. Bring a canned good and go to the free opening night from 5 to 10 p.m. The armband is $25 if anyone wants rides.
  • Saturday, January 16, or Sunday, January 17. Go in the afternoon for the barns and exhibit halls. Gates open at noon on both days.
  • Wednesday, January 20. Seniors pay $6 admission from noon to 10 p.m., and the midway opens at 3 p.m. with $25 armbands.
  • Sunday, January 24. Go early if you want a last visit. The gates close at 7 p.m.

Parking is $10 per visit, which adds up over three or four trips. For more on the town around the fairgrounds, see our Palmetto neighborhood guide.
